In Their Landscape

In Their Landscape was begun in 1986 in Barnes Hill, Antigua. Spanning three decades, the portfolio includes environmental portraits and figure studies of children ages 2 to 12 from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

These children have an intriguing self-awareness, a curiosity, and an unrestrained human energy that I've been inspired to capture. This is a generation more aware of their impact on the Earth, relationship and balance with the Earth, and duties to protect their landscape than any previous generation. My aim is not simply to record the subjects' existence but their developing awareness of their landscape, their world, around them.

My own childhood, and now raising a family, in one of the greatest multi-racial environments of the world, New York City, has influenced me through this process and led me to look at the childhood experience beyond my own background. Rather than limiting this portfolio to a community in a single geographic area or single ethnic group, as is common in documentary photography, I define the subject community as children, independent of location and background, in the midst of a common experience.
